Timothy Roy Harpell
October 29, 1941 – November 7, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Timothy Roy Harpell on November 7, 2024, in Huntsville, Ontario, at the age of 83.
Tim leaves behind his beloved wife and partner of 63 years, Barbara (Carr-Harris) Harpell. He was a proud and devoted father to David (Ge), Eric (Heather), Michael (Crystal), and Gregory (Lisa), and a loving grandfather to Thomas, Ethan, Trevor, Craig, John, and Peter.
Born in Kingston, Ontario, on October 29, 1941, Tim lived a life guided by integrity, ingenuity, a generous spirit, and an unwavering commitment to family and helping others.
Tim’s interest in history began early. As a high school student, he joined the Fort Henry Guard at Old Fort Henry in Kingston, eventually representing the Guard in significant historical reenactments. He proudly sailed on the Bateau Marguerite along the St. Lawrence River to Upper Canada Village, and took part in commemorative ceremonies alongside the U.S. Marines at Arlington and at Earls Court in London, England.
An accomplished student, Tim attended the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology (now Algonquin College), where he earned top honours at the IEEE Ottawa Chapter’s student competition for his paper on the pacemaker — a project that sparked a lifelong interest in healthcare. He later graduated from Queen’s University as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and began his career as a design engineer with Measurement Engineering in Arnprior, Ontario.
His passion for education and helping others led him to teach at Sir Sandford Fleming College’s satellite campus in Cobourg. He later transitioned into business, first managing the instrumentation division of Searle (later Siemens), and eventually founding his own company. He became one of the early pioneers in bringing nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging to Canada, earning respect throughout the healthcare industry for his leadership, innovation, and unwavering integrity over a 30-year career.
Tim’s adventurous spirit extended beyond his work. He loved skiing, sailing, and later in life, flying — earning his private pilot’s license and becoming the first person in Canada to take delivery of a composite aircraft equipped with a ballistic parachute.
He will be remembered as an accomplished, fun-loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend — a man who instilled strong values of honour and integrity in his sons, and whose generosity and adventurous nature left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
We celebrate Tim’s life on August 24th, 2025, 2:00–4:00 pm., at 384 Watson Ave., Oakville, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Shelter, Huntsville’s The Table Food Bank, or Muskoka Women’s Shelter and Services.
